Club Visit To France 19th September 2008


On September 19th 2008 a group of 22 Members and Friends og the Club went to Normandy France, where they visited many area's relating to the Second World WarThe first Visit was to Evrecy where Gary Williams laid a Wreath: also a Slate Plaque crafted by Alan Hicks, this was left at the Welch Division Monument on behalf of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and Friend's of Blaenau FfestiniogThere followed a visit to Bayeux, the largest British Cemetery where crosses were laid on the Graves, of where 120 Soldiers from the 6th Royal Welch Battalion have been Buriedthe tour then went on to the British Sector with some of the inital landing by the 6th Airborne Division, visiting Ranville Cemetery and Pegasus Bridge, then travelling onto Aromanches where they saw Gold Beach and the remains of the Mulberry HarbourThe American Cemetery was also visited this overlooking the tragic Omaha Beach followed by a visit to Pointe-du-hoc, and then travelling to La Combe the largest German Military Cemetery in Normandy, where 21222 Soldiers FellIt was a worthwhile visit which was a very moving experience, made more enjoyable by the knowledgeable planning of Geraint Roberts and the care of the driver Kevin Williams
