Holland Visit 18th Sep 2009
On September 18th 2009 a group of friend's and member's of the Royal Welch Fusilier's Club Blaenau Ffestiniog Branch travelled to Antwerp,Belgium and Arnhem Holland.
The tour coincided with the 65th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, where we witnessed the Commemorative Parachute Drop on the Ginkel Heide, one of the Drop Zone's in September 1944, then we crossed over the John Frost Bridge ( The Film A Bridge Too Far) to Oosterbeek Cemetery and a visit to the Airborne Museum.
A visit then followed to Schoonselhaf Cemetery in Antwerp where a Poppy Wreath and a Slate Plaque was laid in Memory of Mr Elwyn P. Morris (Blaenau Ffestiniog) by the Family of the late Mr Gwilym Roberts (Bolton Cafe)
Then on to S'hertogenbosch where Mr Michael Jennings and Mr Gary Williams on behalf of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the People of Blaenau Ffestiniog laid two Wreath's, one on the 53rd Welch Division and one on the Welsh Monument.
A slate Plaque crafted by Mr Alan Hicks was laid at the 53rd Welch Division in memory of the late Mr Iorwerth Thomas which will be kept at the County Office by Mr Luc Van Gent.
On behalf of the Group may I thank Mr Michael Jennings and Mr Gary Williams for the Moving Ceremony at the Monument.
Also by the knowledgeable planning of Mr Geraint Roberts, and the care of the driver Mr Kevin Williams. (Llew Jones)
